The story of Lady Godiva’s ride through the streets of Coventry in order to save her people from taxation was popular with mid-nineteenth century artists and writers, reflecting contemporary taste for the medieval and chivalric.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert on his birthday, 26 August 1857
