Isaac van Amburgh was an American lion tamer who amazed the crowds of London with his daring performances. Queen Victoria saw his show seven times over six weeks in 1839. The lion presiding over the group bears a striking resemblance to the bronzes in Trafalgar Square, also designed by Landseer.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1839
