OSWALD ACHENBACH (1827-1905)

Evening

1850-54

RCIN 403846

The atmospheric effects and long shadows of the low evening sun are particularly beautifully rendered in this picture, which depicts the Roman hill town of Ariccia, with the Church of the Assunta by Bernini at the summit. This area was a well known beauty spot, popular with visiting foreign artists from Richard Wilson to Camille Corot.

Purchased by Prince Albert and presented to Queen Victoria at Christmas 1854
