When purchased, this painting was thought to be by Andrea di Cione, called Orcagna. Prince Albert paired it with RCIN 400039 for display at Osborne. It is now thought to be by the (still anonymous) artist who painted the altarpiece known as the Madonna of the Misericordia (The Virgin of Mercy), in the Accademia, Florence.

Purchased by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert on his birthday, 26 August 1846
