JAMES GILES (1801-70)

Balmoral: design for the north-west front of the new castle

dated 1853

RCIN 452814

The royal couple purchased the Balmoral Estate in 1852, and soon replaced the existing Castle with an entirely new residence. The Aberdeen artist James Giles was employed to make watercolours of the projected building, working from ground plans and studies of the site. The Queen proudly described the new Castle as Prince Albert’s ‘own creation’.
