Before a finely detailed landscape are Apollo, the sun god, and his twin sister Diana, goddess of the moon. Prince Albert was particularly interested in Cranach, one of the principal artists of the German Renaissance who had painted the Prince’s ancestors at Wittenberg. This picture is outstanding among the twelve by Cranach that he acquired.

Purchased by Ludwig Gruner for Prince Albert in 1844.
