FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER (1805-73)

Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, with Prince Alfred

1849

RCIN 403121

Despite appearances this picture was painted in London. In its portrayal of the young princes as hunters it recalls earlier court portraits by artists such as Vélázquez. The elder boy (aged 8) wears his own Duke of Rothesay tartan, while Prince Alfred (aged 5) wears Balmoral tartan.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert on the Queen’s birthday, 24 May 1849
