DANIEL MACLISE (1806-70)

A Scene from 'Undine'

Inscribed 1843

RCIN 405638

Undine, a beautiful water spirit, is being escorted through an enchanted woodland by her husband Huldbrand, when the couple are ambushed by the sinister spirit Kühleborn. The German novel Undine was a popular subject for British artists during the 1840s and the intricate border of flowers and figures around the central scene here evokes German book engravings of the period.

Purchased by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert on his birthday, 26 August 1843

No. 53
