Gems and Jewels
The practice of gem-carving to create cameos and intaglios reached a peak in Greek art, and continued in Rome. It was revived in the sixteenth century, often using mythological subjects drawn from classical examples. Many of these pieces depict individual characters, but several show more elaborate scenes taken from mythology, especially Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
