      PETER OLIVER (1589-1647)

      Venus, Mercury and Cupid

      1634

      RCIN 452458

Venus watches as Mercury, messenger to the gods, instructs her son, Cupid. The education of the gods was a popular theme in Renaissance and Baroque art; in this case it suggests that true cultivation requires the civilising experience of love as well as the discipline of study.

Acquired by Queen Victoria in 1885
