Louis XIV transformed Versailles from a hunting lodge to a palace. In this painting the main building is complete, but the two wings are still under construction. Upon his accession in 1820 George IV emulated the earlier French king by turning the Queen’s House (as it was called) into Buckingham Palace.

Purchased by George IV in or before 1809
