ATTRIBUTED TO FRANÇOIS HERVÉ (ACTIVE 1781-96)

Side chair

late eighteenth century

RCIN 31831

This pair of chairs is clearly emblematic of Venus, the goddess of Love, whose son, Cupid, carried a bow and love-enflaming arrows. The chairs are part of a set of fourteen that were almost certainly made for Carlton House by the French maker François Hervé.

Supplied to George IV
