      Pedestal

      c.1811

      RCIN 3202

The design of these pedestals – three griffins with outstretched wings and a palmette leaf on each breast – is inspired by an ancient marble fragment found in Rome and engraved by the architect Charles Heathcote Tatham, whose highly influential Etchings … of Ancient Ornamental Architecture of 1799 provided the source. The pedestals are part of a set of nine supplied for Carlton House in 1811.

      Supplied to George IV, 1811
