This portrait derives from a depiction of 1635 by the same artist, of Louis XIII crowned by Victory (Musée du Louvre, Paris), celebrating his capture of La Rochelle in 1628 (incidentally defeating his brother-in-law, Charles I, and establishing the absolute power of the French monarchy). George IV, who showed great interest in French painting as well as French history, had the portrait hung in St James’s Palace.

First recorded in the collection of Queen Anne in 1705
