The hero Hercules was renowned for his feats of physical strength and courage. The myth depicted by this bronze shows the fatal moment after Hercules has killed the centaur, Nessus, who had abducted his bride, Deianira. Hercules put on a shirt dipped in Nessus’s blood, a deadly poison which caused intolerable burning.
