Fan depicting 'Bacchus and Ariadne'

This fan shows the moment when Bacchus proposes marriage to Ariadne after discovering her on the island of Naxos. The happy couple are surrounded by followers of the god, including female dancing figures, musicians and a woman proffering a goblet of wine.

Given by William IV to Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge; by descent to Queen Mary
