Sir Joshua Reynolds dominated British art in the later eighteenth century through the development of what he called the ‘Grand Manner’ for historical subjects and portraits. His work was neglected by George III and avidly collected by the Prince of Wales, who hung many examples at Carlton House. He also commissioned Henry Bone to paint this enamel copy of Reynolds’s original, then in the possession of the Earl of St Ossory.

Painted for George IV, 1803
