The Rape of Europa

Jupiter fell in love with Europa, the daughter of the King of Tyre, and disguising himself as a white bull, charmed her with his appearance. She garlanded him with flowers and climbed on his back. Jupiter then carried her off to Crete and ravished her. In both this painting and this clock, the story’s brutality is contrasted with the exquisite beauty of the art work.
