The Dutch artist Gerrit van Battem specialised in imaginary landscapes executed in watercolour and bodycolour, and intended to be framed and hung. A number of these represent winter scenes, a popular subject in the Netherlands during the ‘Little Ice Age’ of the seventeenth century.
