JOHN UNDERWOOD OF AYR

'Tam O'Shanter' chair

1822

RCIN 27942

This chair is closely associated with the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns (1759-96). The back is decorated with brass plaques on which are engraved the lines of Burns’ poem, Tam O’Shanter. The chair is made from the oak timbers of the Kirk at Alloway, Burns’ birthplace; when the roof collapsed at the end of the eighteenth century its timbers were reused to make items associated with Burns.
