This vivid head was painted by Annibale Carracci, the most famous of the Carracci family of artists who founded an Academy for painters in Bologna in 1582. This portrait is the type of study from everyday life practised by the Carracci. The direct spontaneity and broad open brushwork is in deliberate contrast to the Mannerist style of the previous generation of painters working in Italy.
