REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (LEIDEN 1606-AMSTERDAM 1669)

Agatha Bas (1611-1658)

Signed and dated 1641

RCIN 405352

Agatha Bas and her husband, a wool merchant, lived in the same street in Amsterdam as Rembrandt and both were known to the artist. Rembrandt has depicted the figure within a painted frame, blurring the boundaries between the imaginary space within and the real world outside. This is accentuated by the striking gesture of the hand resting against the frame and the fan protruding over the edge.
