GIOVANNI LORENZO BERNINI (1598-1680)

A self-portrait

c. 1675-80

RCIN 905539

Bernini was the leading sculptor and architect of the Roman Baroque, but he also executed a number of drawn and painted portraits. In this self-portrait, the ageing artist has investigated his own features with great honesty, revealing his deeply furrowed brow, hollow cheeks and sagging eyelids.
