RAPHAEL DAVID MAKLOUF (B. 1937)

Queen Elizabeth II

c.1984

RCIN 94657

In 1982, a competition was held by the Royal Mint to find an artist to make new image of The Queen to feature on British coins. The work of the Jerusalem-born sculptor Raphael Maklouf was selected. Maklouf’s initial designs were based on a photograph taken by Lord Snowdon, but once appointed he was granted two sittings with Her Majesty in order to complete his bronze bust. The finished work shows The Queen wearing the Diamond Diadem. Maklouf’s image of The Queen featured on coins from 1 January 1985 until 1998.
