ALBRECHT DÜRER (1471-1528)

The Virgin and Child crowned by two angels

1518

RCIN 800052

This small print shows the Virgin in a number of roles. The crowning angels show her role as Queen of Heaven; the apple refers to Eve, her Old Testament counterpart. The circlet of roses indicates her identity as the ‘rose without thorns’ and the fence symbolises the ‘enclosed garden’ with which she was associated, both references to her virginity.
