ALBRECHT DÜRER (1471-1528)

The Triumphal Cart of the Emperor Maximilian

1522

RCIN 830118

This large print was originally intended to be part of a huge frieze celebrating the rule of the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I, which remained uncompleted on his death in 1519. The print shows Maximilian seated in a cart driven by Reason, and being led by personifications of his virtues. The Emperor is being crowned with a laurel wreath by Victory.
