Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528)

The Sea Monster c.1498

RCIN 800080

Dürer gave no clue about the subject of this engraving, which he mentions in his Journal, and its precise meaning is not known. It shows a marine abduction: the woman is being carried away from the anguished group in the background. The print is also a study of the nude female figure, which Dürer explored in a number of works at this time, among them Pupila Augusta.
