Apollonius Rhodius (c. 295-215 BC)
The Argonautica 1523
RCIN 1058014
The Argonautica tells the story of Jason and the Argonauts, and was traditionally ascribed to Orpheus, the mythical Greek poet. Holbein’s frontispiece illustrates Lucretia, a Roman noblewoman who committed suicide after being raped, and on the right Judith with the head of Holofernes, whom she had beheaded after intoxicating him with wine.
