The subject of this drawing is unclear, but may relate to the story of Venus (known as Pupila Augusta, or ‘august ward’), who is shown approaching the shore with two attendants. This title is inscribed on the basket to the right of the drawing. The three women in the foreground appear to predict her arrival. The drawing is probably a study for a print which was never executed: the inscriptions are in reverse, and would therefore appear in the correct orientation in a print.
