Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528)

Philip Melanchthon 1526

RCIN 800111

The scholar Philip Melanchthon was one of Martin Luther’s most active supporters. He came to Nuremberg in 1525 and lodged with Willibald Pirckheimer, who probably introduced him to Dürer. The inscription states that Dürer was able to depict the features of the living Philip, but the skilled hand could not portray his mind.
