Ovid (43 BC-17 AD) Lyons: Jean de Tournes
Metamorphoses 1557-59
RCIN 1081200
This illustrated edition of Ovid’s Metamorphoses was published in Lyons by Jean de Tournes. This was a popular text and numerous versions of these illustrations were published across Europe in the sixteenth century. One of them may have provided the inspiration for the scene of Diana and Actaeon on the backplate of RCIN 62997, which combines the figures of Actaeon and the goddess and her nymphs from one plate and the fountain with a winged putto from another.
