HARTMANN SCHEDEL (1440-1514)

Liber chronicarum (The Nuremberg Chronicle)

1493

RCIN 1071477

This ambitious work offers a retelling of world history centred on Nuremberg, with a revolutionary marriage of text and illustration not seen before in a printed book. Hieronymus Munzer, a Nuremberg physician, composed this map of Northern Europe based upon the so-called Eichstatt map by Nicholas de Cusa (1400/01-64), a German cardinal. The printer, Anton Koberger, was Dürer’s godfather.
