Poliziano (or Politian) was one of the foremost scholars of his day, and was tutor to the children of Lorenzo de’ Medici. His published letters were popular reading throughout Europe. Erasmus was an enthusiast, and mined them for adages to add to his collection. Holbein’s frontispiece includes Cratander’s printer’s mark of Occasio (Opportunity).
