HANS HOLBEIN THE YOUNGER (1497/8-1543)

Henry Brandon, 2nd Duke of Suffolk (1535-1551)

c. 1541

RCIN 422294

All Holbein’s surviving miniatures were produced during his second English visit (1532 – 43), including this miniature of Henry Brandon which must date from about 1541. Holbein is alleged to have been taught the art of miniature painting by Lucas Horenbout. This miniature, conveying a deep sense of spatial awareness and a profound understanding of Italian Renaissance portraiture, demonstrates how far removed Holbein’s approach was from that of Horenbout.
