ETIENNE DELAUNE (1518-83)

A design for a ewer with the story of Apollo and Daphne

c.1560-80

RCIN 913053

Delaune made numerous meticulous designs for metalwork, among them this design for a ewer decorated with the story of Daphne. She spurned the advances of Apollo by turning into a laurel tree. Her transformation can be seen in the central medallion and in the handle, which is modelled as a woman with limbs of laurel.
