FRANK HURLEY (1885-1962)

The 'Yelcho' sighted

30 Aug 1916

RCIN 2580122

Hurley altered the original negative of this image to create a more dramatic scene. The relief ship Yelcho was originally photographed nearer the shore; Hurley has erased it and painted in another vessel further away on the horizon. The smoke from the beacon on the hillside was also added by hand to emphasise the men’s desperation.
