FRANK HURLEY (1885-1962)

Sir Ernest Shackleton arriving at Elephant Island

30 August 1916

RCIN 2580123

Despite its title, this photograph in fact depicts the departure of the James Caird for South Georgia, 24 April 1916. Hurley did not photograph the actual moment of rescue but renamed this image in order to complete the narrative and to show the return of Shackleton on the relief ship Yelcho, four months later.
