HERBERT GEORGE PONTING (1870-1935)

Midnight in the Antarctic summer

30 Jan 1911

RCIN 2580010

In the middle of the Antarctic summer, the sun does not set and it is visible continually throughout the 24-hour cycle. The closer one is to the Pole, the more days of continuous sunlight there will be. Here Ponting has photographed the sun breaking through the clouds at midnight.
