WORKSHOP OF ANDREA DEL SARTO (FLORENCE 1486-FLORENCE 1530)

The Virgin and Child with Saint John

c.1515

RCIN 406113

Frederick, Prince of Wales had an ‘especial affection’ for Andrea del Sarto, who was regarded as a good substitute for the heavenly beauty of the ‘Divine’ Raphael. This is one of many versions of this composition produced in del Sarto’s studio; recent conservation has revealed the subtle cloudy effect of the paint application, especially in the shadows. Acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales Cat. 123
