During the eighteenth century Carlo Maratta was regarded as the last (and not the least) exponent of the great tradition of Raphael. He gave his name to a room at Houghton Hall and to a popular design of frame, an example of which has been used for this painting. First recorded at Kensington Palace in 1750 Cat. 127
