HENRY WILLIAMS (ACTIVE 1728-38)

Stool

1737

RCIN 1242

A certain amount of new furniture was commissioned for Queen Caroline’s use at Hampton Court Palace in 1737, the year of her premature death. These stools, from a set which originally numbered 18, incorporate classical architectural vocabulary such as the Vitruvian scroll, the fish-scales, acanthus leaves and lion paw feet. The stools were originally accompanied by four matching settees, which do not survive. Supplied to George II in 1737 Cat. 114
