HANS HOLBEIN THE YOUNGER (1497/8-1543)

Sir Henry Guildford (1489-1532)

Dated 1527

RCIN 400046

Holbein had a special appeal for the Hanoverians as a German who described with such insight so many important characters at a key moment in English history. Queen Caroline ‘discovered’ a complete set of Holbein portrait drawings of Tudor courtiers, which she hung in her closet at Kensington Palace, and would have appreciated this painting of the friend and companion of Henry VIII’s youth. Acquired by George II or Queen Caroline Cat. 143
