LOUIS RENARD (C.1678-1746)

Poissons, écrevisses et crabes... que l'on trouve autour des Isles Moluques, et sur les côtes des Terres Australes...

1754

RCIN 1057042

These lively depictions of marine life of the East Indies were produced at a time when the wildlife of that area was almost completely unknown in Europe. The descriptive text on the plates tends towards the anecdotal rather than the scientific. The plate shown here describes a fish, Toctasse Moor, as very good with a garlic sauce when fresh. Acquired by 1860 Cat. 179
