WILLIAM HOGARTH (1697-1764)

Paul before Felix Burlesqu’d

1751

RCIN 811923

This print was issued as the subscription ticket for a pair of biblical prints by Hogarth, and is a direct parody of one of them, which depicted the trial of Paul before the judge Felix. In the dress of the figures and the sarcastic inscription, Hogarth showed his dislike of the Dutch art which was then popular with British connoisseurs. In the Royal Collection by 1845 Cat. 93
