HENRY WILLIAMS (ACTIVE 1728-38)

Open armchair

1737

RCIN 31178

This pair of chairs was intended to be situated in the centre of the Withdrawing Room in the Queen’s Apartments at Hampton Court Palace. This room lay between the Privy Chamber and the Bedchamber and was used to hold ‘Drawing Rooms’, formal gatherings open to the public and hosted by the Queen. The x-frame support of the base is likely to be derived from sixteenth- and seventeenth-century prototypes. Supplied to George II in 1737 Cat. 115
