Classical architectural vocabulary is here employed to the full: a Vitruvian scroll runs around the edge of the plate and the outer edge is carved with egg-and-dart, there are swags of oak leaves and acanthus leaf carvings. The mirror, with its distinctive cresting carved with Prince-of-Wales feathers, can be seen depicted in Mercier’s painting (cat. 255) which is hanging on the wall to the left.
