JOHN HENRY BASTIDE (ACTIVE 1711-D. 1770)

Map of the Battle of Glen Shiel, 1719 (Glen Shiel, Highland Region, Scotland, UK) 57°10ʹ12ʺN 05°21ʹ00ʺE)

c.1719 or later

RCIN 727016

Jacobite forces met government troops at the Pass of Glen Shiel, in the north-west Highlands of Scotland, on 10 June 1719. The terrain was particularly challenging, with mountains trapping the combatants on both sides. The battle was a victory for the government commander, General Wightman, ending Jacobite hopes of a challenge to the Hanoverians in 1719. Bastide’s map combines a bird’s-eye view of the valley with an elevation of the adjacent mountains. King’s Military Map Collection Cat. 45
