GASPARD DUGHET (1615-75)

Landscape with Figures Beside a Waterfall

c. 1653-54

RCIN 405320

This landscape and cat. 135 are executed in the dark, grave style Gaspar Dughet learned from his brother-in-law, Nicolas Poussin; both seem to depict the landscape around Rome as it might have appeared in ancient times. Though not created as a pair, these two have been treated as such since at least the eighteenth century. Acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales, who also commissioned the frame Cat. 134
