Bernard Lens was the first artist in England to popularise the painting of miniatures on ivory. He was ‘Painter in Enamel’ to George I yet produced very few miniatures for the King. This miniature is based on a portrait of George I by Sir Godfrey Kneller. First recorded in the Royal Collection in 1844 Cat. 189
