LOUIS-FRANÇOIS ROUBILIAC (1702-62)

George Frederick Handel, (1685-1759)

1739

RCIN 35255

This bust depicts Handel dressed in indoor garments of the kind he would have worn in private, perhaps while composing. His lopsided, tasselled cap and disarranged coat suggest a man careless of the material world, his mind on higher things. The bust was produced while Handel was composing Queen Caroline's funeral anthem. It was intended for Handel's own home rather than any official setting. Given to George III, c.1772 – 4 Cat. 252
